Types of ADAS Calibration
Dynamic Calibration: This type of calibration requires driving the vehicle while using a diagnostic computer at a set speed on well-marked roads to calibrate the camera system. During the drive, the vehicle computer calculates the position of the lines on the road, other vehicles, road signs, guard rails and more, and adjusts the camera to be focused in the correct area for these systems to work properly after a windshield replacement.
Static Calibration: Each manufacturer has developed their own targets specific to their vehicles. All static calibrations require the use of a diagnostic computer and target mounted on a special frame placed in front of the vehicle exactly at the measurements specified by that manufacturer. Even a few millimeters off target can reduce the effectiveness of the safety assist system or make the systems inoperable altogether. Without this process, after replacing a windshield, there is no way for the vehicle to know if the camera is aimed properly.
Dual Calibration: Sometimes, vehicles use a combination of both static and dynamic. These can take 30 minutes to 3 hours after the windshield replacement.
Radar Calibration: Radar calibration is the process of adjusting a radar system to ensure its measurements are accurate, consistent, and in compliance with standards, often involving the use of known targets, features, or conditions to establish reference points.
